Overview
Michael has devoted his entire legal career to employment law.
Michael began his legal career representing employers and did so for a span of nearly 10 years. In 2013, Michael formed Murphy Law Group, LLC in order to focus exclusively on protecting the rights of Pennsylvania and New Jersey workers. Michael knows all the angles and pressure points in any employment dispute. He has litigated claims brought under Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 (“Title VII”), the Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act (“WARN”), the Family and Medical Leave Act (“FMLA”), the Age Discrimination in Employment Act (“ADEA”), the Americans with Disabilities Act (“ADA”), the Pennsylvania Human Relations Act (“PHRA”), the Philadelphia Fair Practices Ordinance (“PFPO”), the New Jersey Law Against Discrimination (“LAD”), the New Jersey Conscentious Employee Protection Act (“CEPA”).
Michael also has extensive experience bringing individual and class claims pursuant to the Fair Labor Standards Act (“FLSA”) and similar state wage and hour statutes, including the Pennsylvania Minimum Wage Act (“PMWA”) and the Pennsylvania Wage Payment Collection Law (“WPCL”). He has substantial experience in class and collective action certification, facilitation of class notification, litigation of wage and hour claims, class member depositions, assessment of damages and settlement. He has successfully litigated class and collective claims on behalf of groups of employees and recovered millions of dollars in unlawfully denied compensation.
In addition to the above, Michael provides counseling to employees regarding employment contract negotiation, non-competition agreements, as well as severance package review and negotiation. Finally, Michael provides legal counseling to executives and physicians who are in the process of negotiating initial and renewed employment contacts.
Michael strives to provide quality, client-focused representation. He understands that employment disputes are personal and very emotional. Michael provides frequent updates regarding client matters and is always available to answer any all questions clients have regarding legal matters. Michael learned at a very young age the importance of honesty, hard work and determination and he strives to practice law with these hallmarks in mind.
Michael has written extensively on employment-related topics, has provided commentary for media outlets, and has presented and spoken at both bar association, continuing education and HR-related events.
Michael obtained his undergraduate degree from the University of Scranton, where he played baseball and obtained his law degree from Widener University School of Law where he was designated a Widener Scholar and graduated within the top of his class.
Michael is admitted to practice in Pennsylvania and New Jersey, and before the United States District Court for Eastern District of Pennsylvania, United States District Court for Middle District of Pennsylvania, and the United States District Court for the District of New Jersey.
Michael was born and raised in Bucks County, Pennsylvania, a suburb of Philadelphia, and currently resides there with his wife and four (4) children.
